Violence is the whole essence of authoritarianism

Our thoughts have been with the people of Turkey and Syria this past week. As recovery efforts continue following the terrible earthquake, we also see emerging demands for accountability. Turkish justice authorities have begun to target contractors accused of violating building codes, while Oya Özarslan, Chair of TI-Turkey, highlights the role of corruption in the disaster. Calls will grow to clarify responsibility for both widespread building collapses, but also slow responses.
